Review: Dark Debt (Chicagoland Vampires #11) by Chloe Neill
Thanks mostly to the audiobook, I loved it!!
What I liked: When I started reading Dark Debt, I was having a lot of trouble engaging in the story line. It wasn't slow or anything, just didn't grab me right out of the box. Usually with a series I know I like when that happens, I get the audiobook. Big difference!! I hadn't listened to any books in this series before so putting voices with the characters helped immensely.
There were a couple things that made me so very happy with this installment of Chicagoland Vampires. I actually didn't get aggravated with Ethan for the entirety of the book. Huge improvement. Yes, he's still the Master but he wasn't so arrogant about it with Merit, at least. There were several times were he was actually playful and funny. The other thing that hit me in the head about half way through Dark Debt was Merit and Ethan were acting more like adults without all the relationship drama!! That was key my enjoyment of this book. They actually talked things through and didn't go off half-cocked or didn't second guess their feelings for each other every 5 minutes. YAY!!
While the story line was good, the characters made this book for me. Not just Merit and Ethan but the total cast of characters. I felt the majority of them had more depth and acted more adult in the situations Ms Neill placed them. The other thing I loved was the humor in this book. It cases it was more snark than humor but it all worked so well and wasn't over played!
What I didn't like: Mmm, the ending with the main story line bad guy seemed just a bit too easy. Not complaining though as I loved the rest of the story.
Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Dark Debt especially after my shaky start. There are several surprises at the end that makes me more eager than ever for the next in the series!!
Highly Recommend!!!! (Start with the very first book though)
