Review: A Shiver of Light (Merry Gentry #9) by Laurell K. Hamilton

A Shiver of Light - Laurell K. Hamilton

I've gone around and around in my head on this review, which is not how I usually write my reviews.  I read the book and write the review as soon as possible to get my gut feelings into the review.  With any LKH book, it's a circus of "can't stand it" or "loved it" reviews.

What I liked:  I was very glad Ms Hamilton didn't drag out the pregnancy for another book or two.  Merry pregnant really would have cut into her action driven character.  I especially enjoyed that she didn't heal right away either so the sex scenes didn't begin right away.  Don't get me wrong, one of the major premises of Merry is sex.  At least that's how I read her character.

I also enjoy the short time frame between from one book to the next.  A Shiver of Light picks up almost immediately where Divine Misdemeanors finished.  The same problems with the King of Light are there.  I enjoy all of Merry's Men.  Admittedly she has her "favorites" but I love them all.  I'm not a big Frost fan but his character is written very well.  In fact, I think Ms Hamilton writes the characters in this series extremely well for the storyline.

There were some BIG surprises in A Shiver of Light.  Some I loved, some made me sad.  Nuff said!

A Shiver of Light moves the series along and I loved the ending!

What I didn't like:  Look, you have to know what to expect when you pick up a LKH book.  I did and I wasn't disappointed.  I'm not a fan of tons of sex scenes or talking constantly about sex, but that's the center of this series.  I went into this book knowing sex would be a big portion of the story.  Did that stop me from reading it, no.  I wanted to see what Ms Hamilton had in store for the characters.  Having said that, I was a bit disappointed in how time time was devoted to some of the men.  With so many involved, it's hard for an author to do them justice.

Overall, I wasn't extremely disappointed in the book.  I enjoy the characters Ms Hamilton developed.  I enjoyed the storyline and I skipped a ton of pages about sex.  I got what I expected.

No recommendation here just this: if you love the series, you'll enjoy the book; if you're on the fence, check it out at the library or borrow it from a friend.
